Videos for Students
OK then, we have different kinds of videos for class this year. Some videos will offer you refreshers in SKILLS. These 10-15 minute videos will walk you through specific skills like writing sentences, fixing fragments, outlining paragraphs and understanding prompts. You can watch these when you are confused and need help. They are not required -- they are resources in case you need them.

Some videos will be TEXTS -- that is, videos to watch as if you were reading a short story, play, or book. These videos will often be part of our class time and offer ideas for us to discuss or allusions (yup, look that word up if you need to). Often when these videos are assigned as homework, they will be placed in Edpuzzle -- a Google App that lets you watch short clips, and keeps track of your viewing progress. There may even be some short answer or multiple choice questions in the middle of your videos in Edpuzzle -- which will be graded. You will be told when these are due.

Of course, we will have CLASS videos -- recordings of each day's classes, in case you missed a class, or you need to watch it again as a refresher.

There will also be a few HOW TO videos, that will help you understand some of the ins and outs of how we are doing school this year. Watch these when you can, close to the start of the year, to get the most benefit from them.

Finally, there will be some WASSUP videos -- where Mr. S. will take you aside and chat with you about issues and concerns, about the bigger challenges in life we are all facing. You'll get a warning through your email that one of these has been posted in case you want to tune in. The first of these is Mr. S.'s intro video where he introduces himself to you all.

TEXTS videos
Look for information about the TEXTS Videos on the pages for your Unit. Some of the videos will be available here (and in your Google Classroom), and some will only be available through your Edpuzzle classroom.
Why? Edpuzzle keeps track of whether or not you have watched the video, and there are often questions in the videos for you to answer.

There are a few TEXT Videos, though, that are good for the whole year. And here they are:

The History of English
A cartoon explanation of Rule #1 of English. If something does not make sense in English, it's usually because of the history of England and the languages of invaders.
Who is The Man?
In this clip you get introduced to "The Man," a character from our American culture dating back to the 1940's.

Pronouns?
One great example of Rule #1 of English comes from our use of Pronouns. These clips also prove why Mr. S. wants you to use more specific words than these ...

Come see the violence
inherent in the system
Monty Python offers an absurdist humor challenging the systems of class, money, education, when it comes to who has power.

Danger of a Single Story
In a TED Talk, a famous African author discusses the kinds of stereotypes we use as we label people, without knowing how much more there is to another person's life and/or story.

Foundations --
These five videos are here because we will refer to them throughout the year -- they are the filters we use to understand the Rules of English, the violence inherent in systems, the dangers of not reading (or listening) deeply to others, and why it matters to find your voice (and stand up to The Man).

Well, the pronouns video is really here just to show how odd language can be ... but the other four are the filters we use all year to focus our studies. Enjoy.
