Book Review 1: Helping Students Get Organized!

Now, not all students share the same gifts or the same challenges. How can one system work for all of them? It can't ... not if by system you mean a simple to follow, step by step, illustrated process. Training a teen is not like building something from IKEA. I've done both ... on more than one occasion.

In the book "That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week," by Ana Homayoun, the author quickly introduces you to her thinking, and then shines a light on the six common challenges she finds among teens based n their different personalities.
​
If you are having trouble with your student -- keeping them organized, on time, and on track, may I suggest this book? Last I looked it was less than $10 for a digital copy you could read on your phone or your computer.

Book Review 2: Not All Students Have Been Created Equal

For those of you who like reading and have the time -- ooooooppss, I've probably lost a lot of you already. Who has the time these days? Well, let's forge on.
I read the book Quiet, by Susan Cain -- a NY Times Best seller from 2012. The author offers some rarely-heard discussion of the differences between introverts and extroverts. She discusses how we all have different temperaments, by nature. That means not everyone learns the same way or works the same way or can be treated in the same ways.
Book Review 3: Recovering Conversation

Students know how to text, Google, tweet, and snapchat. What they no longer know how to do is have a conversation with another person.
​
Author Sherry Turkle has been speaking with students for years, in Middle Schools and colleges and out in the real world after they graduate. She has worked not only doing research, but also as a counselor for young people who are suffering from broken relationships. What she has found is collected in her latest book: Reclaiming Conversations.
