Quarter continues the work being done in Quarter 1 with the Poetry Anthology -- up until the Thanksgiving Break. After the Break we begin a new set of skills, in preparing students to complete their IB/MYP Project.

Unit 2: Middle Years Program Project  --  The MYP

Though the MYP is not truly a part of the English curriculum, English 10 hosts this project and helps students learn the research skills needed to complete their personal project. time will be given in class to work on planning and completing the MYP, though more time will be expected outside of class, and outside of the 60 minutes of homework time allotted to English. Justice High Admin Team has stated they want students to use time during Period 4 Advisory on Wednesdays and Fridays to work on this project Asynchronously (when not in class). The MYP should take somewhere between 15-20 hours outside of class to complete. It will be due before end of February 2021.

The MYP is made up of four activities -- It all starts with (1) research into a topic of the student's choice, and completing a Works Cited (Bibliography) for the research. (2) Students also complete/create a product of some kind to display, describe, or detail -- usually in a Showcase event. This year, that event will no doubt be postponed. (3) Students write a 1500 word paper reflecting on their journey from research to product and the skills they have needed along the way. (4) And to help them accomplish all of this, there is a detailed map or plan -- the MYP Journal. The whole of the project prepares students for their time in IB, and especially for the Extended Essay which is required for an IB Diploma.

Quarter 2 Weeks 1-2

Students are introduced to the MYP through various brainstorming activities and learning about the world of IB. This includes an extended visit from Ms. Kresse-Rodrigues, the coordinator for the IB Diploma program at Justice High School who helps students think ahead about the IB program and a path to the IB Diploma. In addition, we introduce all the parts of the MYP to students to get them started thinking about what they want to research and how to get started. Students may then continue if they wish to gather supplies, ideas, or research over the Winter Break.

For homework reminders, check either Schoology or the Daily Recap emails Mr. S. send out at the end of every day's class. Copies of Recaps are also available here.
